What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. As the proteins inside the lens age, they gradually harden and yellow, scattering light instead of focusing it cleanly onto the retina. It can develop in one eye or both, often at different rates, and usually progresses slowly enough that many patients don't notice it until it starts affecting daily life.
Signs to watch for
- Blurred or clouded vision
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Halos around lights, especially at night
- Double vision in a single eye
- Colours appearing faded or yellowed
- Increasing difficulty seeing at night
- Frequent changes in your spectacle prescription
