What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually — though not always — linked to raised pressure inside the eye. It's often called the "silent thief of sight" because it progresses gradually and painlessly, with little or no symptom until meaningful vision has already been lost.
How we investigate and treat it
We assess glaucoma using perimetry (visual field testing) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to map the optic nerve in detail, then build a treatment plan around what we find. Treatment usually starts with medicated eye drops or oral medication to lower eye pressure, and can step up to laser treatment or surgery — alone or in combination — if the condition needs more active management.
Why early detection matters
Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered, but its progress can almost always be slowed or stopped once it's caught. Regular eye-pressure checks and optic-nerve imaging — especially if glaucoma runs in your family — remain the most reliable way to catch it early, well before it affects your day-to-day vision.
