What is the uvea?

The uvea is the middle layer of the eye, sitting between the outer sclera and the inner retina. Inflammation here — uveitis — can develop quickly, and if left untreated can threaten sight within a short space of time.

How we diagnose and treat it

Because uveitis is often linked to an underlying systemic condition, we investigate every case in depth — including blood tests, a mantoux test and X-rays where needed — to identify the specific cause. Treatment is then aimed directly at that cause: relieving pain and discomfort, and preventing complications such as glaucoma, macular oedema and scarring of the retina. Steroid eye drops are usually the first line of treatment, with tablets reserved for more severe cases. With the right treatment, uveitis can be controlled and vision preserved.
